People are drawn in by compelling content within the areas of interest they are already seeking out. Know what your target market wants and write to inform. Focus on being a great resource for your topic and niche. Try exceeding the need to know requirements of your audience and over deliver on what they want to know.

Educate Your Demographic

Your demographic may be a bit behind on the technology curve so you may want to write about the value of RSS with your market. Write a free report for them to download and even offer a video tutorial that shows them how to use RSS after they read about the why of RSS. Making sure that your customers and prospects knows what RSS is and how to use it productively is a

New York Times is one of the big media companies that use RSS news feeds to distribute their news content. In March 2005, RSS news feeds contributed 5.9 Million pageviews for New York Times. On my last post on using RSS feeds for increased website traffic series, I posted about a shortcut to Yahoo Directory by submitting your RSS feed to My Yahoo. I got many questions from people asking me what and how RSS feeds are created. In my post, I suggested a few affordable RSS tools that one could use to create RSS easily without any tehnical knowledge. But I came across this article that just kinda explains more:

You can set up outbound syndication for your Web site and expose your content to the world in one afternoon using an XML technology called RSS. For anyone who ever wanted to increase audience and traffic while maintaining content and presentation control, RSS is the answer. Find out how to do it, step by step.

An RSS XML feed is an extremely simple way to let external sites link to content on your Web site. If you're looking for a fast, painless way to do outbound syndication and find a larger audience for your content, RSS is going to be worth your time.

At its most basic, RSS generates a list of links, generated programmatically, to various resources on your site with a description of the content for each link. This XML feed is just a publicly accessible text file and therefore you can easily create your feed to automatically regenerate periodically. This way, new content updates are added to the list without any human effort. With RSS, your news feed can be as dynamic as you like.

And, because it's in XML, other sites can easily consume and display your content feed automatically, thereby driving traffic back to your site. This is a win-win situation for sites that want to increase their traffic while maintaining control of their content.

In this article, you'll learn what you need to create a feed, see a sample feed structure, walk through the code that creates the XML (in this case we've used ColdFusion). I'll also discuss additional steps to take for validating and implementing syndication for your site.
What You NeedTo create the system to generate an RSS feed and make it publicly accessible, you will need three things: a server on the Internet where you can put the feed, a database that has descriptions of your content, and a server-side scripting language with access to your database.

Decide where you will put the file on your Web site. You may want to have multiple feeds in the future, so consider putting it in a directory called "rss." Decide on a filename that you will not change and put it on your Web site in a location that can remain the same for the foreseeable future. Here's an example location and filename:

Decide what content you want to put in the feed. Keep in mind that you will need, at a minimum, two pieces of information for each piece of content you want to syndicate: the title of the content and the URL. For example:

Remember that the author field must contain a valid email address to validate as RSS. The PubDate filed must be properly formatted as a datetime field. For example:

You can use whatever scripting language you like, anything from Perl to ASP. You must be able to do simple string manipulation, pull data from your database, and set the MIME type of the file being served to the browser.

A Sample RSS FeedOnce you have completed steps 1 and 2 on the previous page, it's time to dynamically build the text file. This file will be formatted as XML and has two distinct sections. The top section contains basic information about your feed, such as the title and the time the file was generated. The bottom section has information on each specific piece of content that you wish to syndicate (an "item").

I'll show an example feed, and then I'll show how to generate and write out the file in ColdFusion. The example feed follows; bold items should be replaced with information for your site.

If you follow the methods below well, you will be indexed in yahoo in no time. (normally you have to wait for weeks for this to happen). This is really easy part of RSS promotion. All you need is a Yahoo account/email address and an RSS feed to your site, which can be easily created by an RSS tool like the MyRSSCreator program.

If you don't have a Yahoo account, sign up for a email account there.

Next you want to go to " My Yahoo " Its your personal page at Yahoo. You can go there using the Icons at the top of Yahoo.
On "My Yahoo", look at the topo left corner area below the Search bar that is written "Add Content". Click here and it will take you the a page with a text bar. On the right side of the text bar, click on "Add RSS feed". Cut and paste your RSS feed URL and click to add it to your Yahoo.
Believe it or not but it will let you add your sites feed to Your yahoo. If you went the normal route it would take 6 weeks to 3 months to get your site feed url to show up in a Yahoo search if even then. But if you follow my directions and add it to your yahoo it will show up in 10 days or less. And it will start to show up in yahoo searches for the key words in your posts titles.

If you are having trouble, you can post a comment on this post and I would be ready to help. Once your RSS feed is indexed, it will even start showing up in search results for the relevant keywords. This method is just a start of what you can do with RSS promotion to get increased website traffic.

Ever since I heard of podcasting, I have heard more and more about RSS. Previously I just thought RSS was something out of my league and every website I tried to read to understand it, I didnt just get it (maybe am just some slow learner).

After a few weeks, I have come to know A LOT about RSS feeds. I got a lot of "insider" info how people are utilizing RSS marketing and promotion to get the search engines to crawl them in no time (of course resulting in increased targetted website traffic). The option would be to wait for weeks before the search engines do their "Dance" to index new sites. And that did not even guarantee more website traffic results. Using RSS promotion can actually give you a way better advantage over your competition. You can derive the advantages of having your website exposed by the fact that your RSS feeds are picked up by various aggregators on the web and delivered to feed subscribers, who actually subscribed to receive that kind of information in your feed.
